Six Ways to Make A Difference This Pride

by Alexia Page, GiveOut’s Head of Philanthropy

Pride is a time of celebration and visibility for our community. For many of us, it is a moment to proudly march the streets, wave flags and shout from the rooftops about who we are. However, for people in many countries, this is not possible — more Prides are being banned, and LGBTQI rights are under attack around the world.

As we enter pride month, the anniversary of the Stonewall uprising in 1969, it’s a time to reflect on the power of standing together to support LGBTQI communities globally.

We are excited to announce the GiveOut Pride Match Campaign: from now until the end of June, all donations will be matched through the LGBTQI Solidarity Fund, doubling your impact and unlocking funding for more LGBTQI organisations around the world.

Here are six ways on ways you can get involved this pride to make a difference:

1. Fundraise with GiveOut

Whether you’re hosting a Pride brunch, running a marathon, or celebrating a birthday or wedding, your event can help drive LGBTQI rights forward. Setting up a JustGiving page to fundraise for GiveOut is quick and easy, and this Pride, every pound you raise will be matched through our LGBTQI Solidarity Fund. Need ideas? Our newly launched Fundraising Guide is packed with inspiration to help you get started.

2. Engage Your Workplace

Is your company marking Pride? Whether or not you have an LGBTQI staff network, now is the perfect time to engage your colleagues to raise awareness and fundraise. Organise a Pride event or lunch & learn, and invite GiveOut to speak about the global LGBTQI movement. If you use Benevity at work for employee giving, you can create an employee fundraiser using the ‘GiveOut Pride Match Campaign’ to maximise the benefit of the match to double your impact.

“Partnering with charities during Pride shows our commitment in Tesco at supporting the LGBTQ+ communities to make a tangible difference in their lives.”

You can also plan ahead for your company to sponsor City for LGBT+, our flagship fundraising event in October, where corporate allies gather to hear directly from LGBTQI activists from the UK and around the world.

3. Nominate GiveOut for Grants or Awards

Many organisations offer employee-nominated charity grants or discretionary giving schemes. Nominate GiveOut to receive support, and ask your colleagues to do the same. You can also enter us in public giving draws such as the Movement for Good £1,000 donation draw or similar schemes. These quick actions can unlock real funding with zero cost and minimal effort for you.

4. Offer Pro Bono Support

Many of our corporate allies offer invaluable pro bono support to GiveOut and our grant partners – from legal expertise to communications and strategy. If you work for a law firm or a company with in-house legal team, consider joining the GiveOut LGBTQI Legal Aid Fund which supports organisations using the law and courts to advance equality. We welcome discussion on corporate volunteering for all types of corporate bono support.

5. Donate (and Double Your Impact)

Between now and 30 June, all donations to GiveOut will be matched through our LGBTQI Solidarity Fund. Your generosity will go twice as far to help LGBTQI activists build safe spaces, challenge unjust laws, and support their communities through crises

For those who want to deepen their commitment, join the 100 Circle — a group of incredible donors giving £100+/month to provide long-term, strategic support for the global LGBTQI movement. You can also set up a monthly donation at any level that feels comfortable for you. All monthly donations set up between now and the end of May will have the first two gifts matched!

“LGBTQI organisations need stable, long-term funding to deliver for their communities. GiveOut’s 100 Circle is working to plug the resource gap and allows me to play a small part in supporting frontline activists defending against the rollback of LGBTQI rights.”

As a 100 Circle member, you’ll receive regular impact updates, invitations to purpose-driven events and briefings, and the chance to connect directly with the activists you’re supporting.

If you donate using the giving platforms Benevity or CAF, use the ‘GiveOut Pride Match Campaign’ project to ensure your contribution is matched, and where relevant, unlock additional company matching for even greater impact.

6. Share LGBTQI Stories

Amplifying the voices of LGBTQI people – especially from underrepresented regions and communities – is a powerful act of allyship. During Pride Month, we will be featuring powerful stories from our grant partners around the world, follow us on Instagram and LinkedIn to help spread the word.

Every Action Counts

Pride is not just a month, it’s a movement. By taking action this June, you’re standing in global solidarity with LGBTQI communities at a time when they need it most.
