GiveOut Launches GiveOut Germany

Around the world, LGBTQI people face discrimination, violence, and other serious human rights  abuses simply for being who they are. Same-sex relations are criminalised in 65 jurisdictions, including 12 that impose the death penalty;  while 14 countries criminalise the gender identity and/or expression of trans people.

Courageous activists are undertaking vital work to protect and improve LGBTQI lives, but they lack resources and funding is fragile, especially in the Global South and East. LGBTQI groups receive a tiny fraction of international development aid – just 0.04% of funding  provided by governments. The LGBTQI community and allies want to provide support, but it is not  always easy to do so.

Established in the UK in 2018, GiveOut’s purpose is to help address this need by enabling the LGBTQI community and allies to give in one place to support global LGBTQI equality.

Donations are used to support GiveOut’s work and to provide grants and other support to LGBTQI  organisations worldwide, ensuring they have the resources they need to defend our communities, tackle inequalities and campaign for lasting change.

Launched with two events in Berlin at the end of 2023, the GiveOut Germany Circle brings together the LGBTQI community and allies in Germany to support GiveOut and the global movement for LGBTQI human rights.

GiveOut has partnered with Transnational Giving Europe’s German network, Maecenata Foundation, to allow supporters in Germany to donate tax-efficiently.

The launch of GiveOut’s Germany Circle is proudly supported by IDENTITY Ventures, the ground breaking LGBTQI investment fund.

Rupert Abbott, Executive Director of GiveOut, said:

“We are excited and honoured to be launching the GiveOut Germany Circle, and to be working  with the LGBTQI community and our allies in Germany to support the global movement for LGBTQI  human rights. We would be delighted to hear from anyone who would like to get involved – we  invite you to join us in building a world where LGBTQI people everywhere can live their lives freely  and fully.”

Neville Gabriel, a GiveOut Trustee and CEO of The Other Foundation in South Africa, said:

“LGBTQI people across Africa are facing a severe backlash against the progress they have made to  claim their full and equal citizenship. They need the support of our community and allies everywhere – including in Germany – to break through the backlash at a scale that will make the progress irreversible.”

IDENTITY Ventures said:

“We are very proud to support the launch of the GiveOut Germany Circle. IDENTITY Ventures is bringing more investment into LGBTQI-led businesses in Europe. At the same time, we want to  invest in our communities in some of the hardest places to be LGBTQI, which is why we are  donating a percentage of our profits to GiveOut.”
