(LONDON)— International LGBTQI human rights charity GiveOut has won ‘Breakthrough of the Year’ at the Third Sector Awards, as it reaches nine months since registration as a charity in the UK.
The award recognises innovation in the UK charity sector and GiveOut was commended as a ground-breaking model for bringing new resources into the global LGBTQI movement. The charity raises and directs funds to activists around the world fighting for the equality and dignity of LGBTQI communities.
“We’re delighted to be recognised as Breakthrough of the Year by the Third Sector Awards. We’re passionate about bringing new resources into the global LGBTQI movement and this award will help us connect to even more people and groups who can support our work.”
— Rupert Abbott, Executive Director of GiveOut
The award was decided by a panel of 37 judges comprised of senior charity professionals, and was announced on Thursday 20 September at a ceremony in Grosvenor Square, London.
GiveOut received charity status on 22 December 2017, and since then the team have reached a number of milestones including growing the Board of Trustees, hiring an Executive Director, raising over £100,000 in donations, making an initial set of grants, and establishing two special funds to support global trans activism and LGBTQI activism in Asia respectively.
Joining the founding team in receiving the award last night was Antonia Belcher, a successful businesswoman and trans role model, who has established The Antonia & Andrea Belcher Trans Fund with GiveOut in support of global trans activism. The fund is on track to raise £25,000 this year to support a range of trans activist groups around the world.
“Thank you to our wonderful supporters, Board, and team, for everything they’ve done to get us to this point. Special thanks to Antonia Belcher and Suki Sandhu for establishing funds with GiveOut, and to sponsors The Boston Consulting Group and Camm & Hooper for all their help in our launch year. We look forward to showing the positive impact of our work together in the coming months.”
— Elliot Vaughn, Founder and Chair of GiveOut
